Kitchen countertops take a beating. Day in and day out they withstand spills (page 5), appliances (page 4), and much more. While countertops made of seemingly solid materials such as wood, granite, marble, tile, seem extremely strong, everyday activities can cause them serious damage. Keep reading to learn how you may be destroying your countertops.
Not using a cutting board
- Fun fact: There’s a big debate surrounding wood and plastic cutting boards.
“Fine scratches can disrupt the waterproof sealant on most countertops, making them more susceptible to damage down the road,” according to Bob Vila. For those with a butcher block countertop, foregoing a cutting board may be unwise because the finish of the wood becomes damaged over time. However, some people do choose to use knives directly on their butcher block counters.
Hint: Everyone is probably guilty of doing this.
Putting your keys on the counter

- Fun fact: Car keys are the most common item people lose, according to the Daily News.
Countertops are prone to scratches, which is why setting your keys on the counter is a bad idea. Don’t put handbags on counters either because they have bag feet — the metal dots on the bottom — that can scratch a countertop.
Hint: How groceries can ruin a countertop.
Leaving frozen food on the counter
- Fun fact: More than half of American households have frozen potatoes in their freezers, according to Prepared Foods.
Setting a bag of frozen food on the counter, even when unpacking groceries, isn’t a good idea. As with spills (page 5), the moisture from the frozen food can cause damage to countertops, according to Angie’s List. After unpacking groceries, wipe down countertops to prevent stains.
Hint: How your coffee maker could be destroying your counter.
Hot appliances

- Fun fact: Theodore Roosevelt supposedly coined Maxwell House’s phrase, ‘good to the last drop,’ according to Maxwell House ads.
“Temperature changes can cause some materials to crack,” according to Bob Vila. When in doubt, create a barrier between the appliance and the counter with a dish towel, cutting board, or a plate. The same goes for hair straighteners or curling irons in bathrooms.
Heaney was permanently replaced in the line-up by former BB Steal drummer Craig Rosevear and after a US tour with Def Leppard Lara was replaced by Melbourne musician Jimi 'The Human' Hocking, who had previously fronted his own band, Jimi Human and Spectre 7, that released an album and two singles at the turn of the decade. Screaming jets all for one rarely without a comb. While their single releases rarely scored high on the charts, they won significant airplay on rock radio and the band's tours were wildly successful. During a series of shows with Ugly Kid Joe, Heaney was fired and replaced for the rest of the tour by one-time Judas Priest drummer Dave Holland. While the Screaming Jets remained only moderately successful overseas, in Australia they were one of the top-drawing live bands of the early-mid 1990s and perhaps the last remaining example of the pub rock acts that had ruled the country's live scene in the late 1970s - mid 1980s. The band's next album Tear of Thought, which featured Heaney's drumming, was initially slow to gain acceptance until a cover of Boys Next Door's 'Shivers' saw the Screaming Jets back in the charts.
Hint: Why you should always use a coaster.
Not cleaning up spills
- Fun fact: Billions of gallons of liquid refreshments not including alcohol are sold in the U.S., according to Yahoo.
Spills are especially troublesome for granite, marble, and butcher block counters. Why? Because spills can penetrate the surface, according to the DIY Network. Clean up spills immediately and always use coasters. Leaving a spill can cause stains.
Hint: Think twice before doing this to your countertops.

Excessive weight

- Fun fact: Microwaves can weigh up to 70 pounds, according to Hunker.
“Placing heavy objects near unsupported edges or joints can cause cracks, ruptures, and fractures,” according to Bob Vila. Standing on a countertop to reach the top shelf of a cabinet isn’t a good idea. Neither is putting a heavy microwave on your counter.
Hint: Don’t use well-known cleaning agent on all counters.

Using the wrong cleaning supplies
- Fun fact: The average American spends $42 on cleaning supplies a month, according to the Statistic Brain Research Institute.
Using incorrect cleaning products can wreak havoc on the life of a countertop. Don’t use vinegar on granite or marble surfaces because, over time, the surface will be dulled, according to the DIY network. However, vinegar is a great cleaning solution for butcher block countertops.

You could check the product serial number against the online identification sites, that of course
could be faked. Also, if the computer has an OS X and is able to tell you in System Profiler or
other listing of internal hardware, a regular PC hardware would appear a bit different than Mac.
With the questionable product in your possession or close proximity for inspection, you may
find more information. If you can start it & read the information inside, much more is learned.
Specifications could be cross-checked with online accessible databases, http://everymac.com
shows builds of Apple product listed and if you use an identify by serial number database, to
see what the alleged Apple or PC-fake isn't or is, that should be easy.. Easier if you have it.

Some of these sites also offer visual identification of models, where to look for in-device
serial numbers, some may be hidden or inside; others visible if unit is On, in software.
Hopefully this helps somewhat. Also an indicator may be price. If a new Apple computer or
an iDevice relies on the original owner's Apple ID and their information, it may not be worth
owning unless they transfer it. If the unit has a tie-in to an AppleID and they haven't set it
up for a new user, you may have to take the unit to an Apple Authorized service provider to
have them help set up a new owner (appleID) if you don't know how. -- And take along the
original owner whose ID set up the Mac in the first place, so they can transfer ownership.
A fake product should not need an AppleID or it may have an illegal clone on board. A fake

would probably either be a hack- in tosh or a windows pc that looks like MacBook Air. Or a
copy made by some contractor to look like a Mac. You could look into the Apple site and
check to see how to inquire deeper, in Apple Legal site. Or how to report a fake.
Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
